Hi All:
Tuesday night’s meeting was primarily a wrap up for the end of
the year. Following are a few of the highlights: Volunteers Needed Tuesday night May 22nd is Kindergarten Family Fun Night at the Elementary Center. It is a fun event where parents and children entering Kindergarten come to the school, meet their new teacher, ride on a school bus (around the parking lot), eat in the cafeteria, become familiar with the layout of the building (scavenger hunt), and more. The PTO helps with the scheduled activities and sets up a booth of our own to introduce our group and collect parent info – e-mail addresses etc. Anyone able to help – please contact an officer. Thank you!!
June
1st at 9:45am will be 6th Grade
Recognition
I think someone counted 49 parents at the meeting last night --- Normally there might be 4 Most, if not all, stayed to the end – around 11:30pm
I understand parents who were unable to attend have been calling and e-mailing their concerns to Dr. Stoker and Mr. Rakauskas. Those comments were appreciated by the Board and community members. A good part of the evening was spent discussing alternative ways the school can get needed training and evaluation time without disrupting children’s education or parent’s work schedules. After much discussion, the vote on the Act 80 days was tabled in order to allow the Administration to prepare a plan that balances student, parent, and staff needs in order to satisfy educational goals. The discussion will continue in the next “working meeting” to be held in the same place on June 4th . This will be the time and place to share your thoughts and concerns in person. Comments and questions can be addressed to the Administration and Board through email prior to the next meeting. Because the Administration plans to explore alternative proposals, it will be very important to follow this issue through to the vote.
Mrs. Joyce, Trail’s Curriculum Director, presented information on the performance of Lackawanna Trail as seen on the PA state website. www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/pennsylvania... She showed parents to how to use the information compiled by the state to compare our District with other Districts across PA. The information is based on compliance with No Child Left Behind, PSSA scores, etc. The state sets a goal line and schools are measured against that mark. You can see our standing at the link above.
Earlier in the evening parents spoke about the need for students to have quality time with teachers to improve our school’s scores. Some parents brought up their thoughts on there being too much down time during the day. At the last meeting a parent expressed concerns about Trail’s student PSSA scores. Mrs. Joyce asked that parents contact her with questions regarding interpretation of student test scores, the current curriculum or the changes that are required as the District transitions to the State mandated Common Core Curriculum.
Attached is a copy of the agenda we followed last night. If you have any questions – please contact Tracy twescott@ha-pa.com or me at j.wohlgemuth@pennsecurity.com .
We hope to see you at the working meeting June 4th – 7:30pm in the elementary center. Because the Administration plans to explore and present alternative proposals, it will be very important to follow through to the vote.
Your voice is still needed.

HELP NEEDED!!!
The PTO needs at least 5 helpers to pull off buying about 1,000 books
for our students,
Saturday, November
12th
at the
Putnam Penguin
Warehouse Sale. After hearing from several people I need to clarify – The PTO has the money to purchase the books. It is part of our budget that you generously contribute to through fundraisers and events.
We are looking for help picking out and loading up the books we purchase at the sale..
Twice a year, the PTO gives every student in our school a book through a
program that we call
Pick
A
Wonderful
Story
(aka
PAWS.).
To keep our costs low, the majority of the books that we purchase for
the students are from the Putnam Penguin Warehouse Sale. The next sale
will be held Saturday, November 12th in Conklin, NY. The plan is to
meet up at
9:30am
to carpool to the sale (location TBD based on who is coming.)
It takes about 45 minutes to get to
Conklin. That gets us to the sale at about 10:30 which is about 2
hours before the doors actually open between 12:30 and 1pm. From
experience, we have found that it is MUCH better to get there
early. By the time the sale starts, the line is wrapped around the
building and all down the road and those people that get there right
when the sale starts will wait hours just to get into the sale. We
will walk right in when the sale starts, the shelves will be fully
stocked and be at least somewhat organized and we can get all of our
shopping done within a couple of hours. We usually stop for pizza
after we're done and get home around
5pm.
The warehouse sale is phenomenal for the PTO because
every book that has a list price of $9.99 or less are priced at only
$1. We can get some amazing titles for the kids at a great price.
If you or your family are big readers or you have
someone on your Christmas list that is, you might want to consider
joining us at the warehouse sale. We always take time to shop for
ourselves too! Although half of the warehouse sale is kids books,
they also have tons of other kinds of books...adult hard cover best
sellers (I bought The Help last year,) Christmas books, audio books,
cookbooks, sewing books, home improvement books, jumbo-sized kids
books, sticker books, etc. Last year I bought all of my children's
teachers big piles of books for their classroom libraries. Another
mom has a preschooler and bought the whole class Xmas books and gave
the teacher giant copies of the Velveteen Rabbit and the Little
Engine that Could.
If you are interested, please contact
